Press Statement on ICE Enforcement and Alex Pretti

For Immediate Release
January 26, 2026

The Tuolumne County Republican Party extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Alex Pretti, the 37-year-old ICU nurse who was fatally shot during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis on January 24, 2026. Mr. Pretti’s death is a tragic loss of life, and our thoughts and prayers remain with those mourning his passing.

We recognize that Americans from across the political spectrum are grappling with the circumstances surrounding this incident, which has sparked widespread protests and national discussion.

Support for First Amendment Rights

The Tuolumne County GOP firmly supports the constitutional right to peaceful, non-violent protest as guaranteed by the First Amendment. Demonstrations, including public assemblies and the recording of government actions, play an essential role in civic life and public accountability.

In response to a specific question from the Union Democrat: “Does the Tuolumne County GOP view people who legally make video during ICE operations as domestic terrorists?” Absolutely not. We strongly affirm that individuals who legally record public events, including law enforcement activity, are exercising a lawful right. Video documentation, when done safely and without interference, is a legitimate form of civic engagement and public oversight.

We do stress that all demonstrations and recordings should be conducted peacefully and must not unreasonably interfere with law enforcement duties, government officials, or counter-protesters. The safety of all Americans, including protestors and officers alike, is paramount.

Respect for Rule of Law and Due Process

The rule of law is foundational to our party’s principles. We support law enforcement in fulfilling their duties safely and fairly, and we also support transparent and impartial review processes when serious incidents occur.

We are encouraged that the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) will conduct an independent, parallel investigation into the shooting, alongside the Department of Homeland Security’s inquiry. Independent review is critical to ensure transparency, accountability, and public trust. We hope everyone will allow sufficient time for these investigations to conclude so that the facts can be fully validated.

Call for Peaceful Dialogue and Reflection

While the nation watches the events unfolding in Minnesota, the Tuolumne County Republican Party calls for calm, respect for lawful protest, and meaningful dialogue. The loss of life and the passions it has stirred remind us of the importance of protecting constitutional freedoms while upholding public safety and justice.

We urge all Americans, regardless of their views on immigration policy or federal enforcement to engage in peaceful, constructive discourse as our country works through this difficult moment.
