The Rise of Democratic Socialism: A Warning for Tuolumne County

Across the nation, a wave of self‑identified Democratic Socialists is reshaping parts of the Democratic Party—with radical ideas that threaten individual freedom, fiscal responsibility, and common‑sense governance. Figures like Zohran Mamdani, Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez (AOC), Jasmine Crockett, and Isaiah Martin embody this shift toward sweeping, state‑driven solutions packaged as “social justice.”

Zohran Mamdani: NYC’s Democratic Socialist Mayoral Nominee

Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Party’s nominee for mayor of New York City, openly calls himself a democratic socialist and proposes sweeping policies: rent freezes, a $30 minimum wage by 2030, universal childcare, fare‑free buses, and city‑owned grocery stores funded by massive tax increases—corporate tax raised from 7.25 % to 11.5 %, and a 2 % income tax surcharge on millionaires—intended to raise $20 billion.

Mamdani has also said “billionaires shouldn’t exist,” part of his wealth‑redistribution rhetoric. He’s called for publicly developed “social housing” and tenant protections, and endorsed a Social Housing Development Agency to build 200,000 affordable units over ten years.

Critics warn he is pro-government schools, pro-teacher union and anti-school choice, and his plans would reverse decades of education reform. Concerns have mounted that his platform echoes slogans like “seizing the means of production,” which clearly takes a page from the Marxist doctrine.

Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez: The Poster‑Child of American Socialism

AOC remains the most recognizable face of the democratic socialist movement. She champions Medicare‑for‑All, tuition‑free public colleges, a jobs guarantee, the Green New Deal, worker cooperatives, and abolition of ICE.

Among her notable quotes:

Unemployment is low because people are working 60, 70, 80 hours a week and can barely feed their kids.” — on capitalism failing working families.

To me, what socialism means is to guarantee a basic level of dignity … no person is too poor to have the medicines they need to live.”

She continues to headline mass rallies — such as the “Fighting Oligarchy Tour” with Bernie Sanders — to promote anti‑billionaire and anti‑corporate messages, obviously staged for maximum media impact and viral moment clicks.

Jasmine Crockett: Progressive Activism in the House

Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett from Texas’ 30th District recently refused to denounce socialism in a congressional vote, characterizing GOP resolutions as political theater: “I voted ‘present’ on the House Resolution to denounce the horrors of socialism, a non‑issue that the GOP has concocted for the sake of more political theater.”

Known for her inflammatory rhetoric and social‑media style clapbacks, Crockett routinely frames herself as a militant progressive, elevating ideological purity over bipartisan cooperation. In March 2025, Crockett infamously called Texas governor Greg Abbott “Hot Wheels”, referring to Governor Abbott’s use of a wheel chair due to his disability.

Isaiah Martin: Performative Tik Tok Star

Isaiah Martin, a Gen‑Z Democratic candidate in Houston’s 18th District was forcibly removed from a hearing on redistricting and charged with disrupting a public meeting, criminal trespass and resisting arrest after disrupting the hearing. The incident was captured on video, is just the latest example of the performative style of political activism that has become the hallmark of far-left, progressive candidates and elected officials.

Why These Figures Pose a Concern

From a conservative perspective, progressives like Mamdani, Ocasio‑Cortez, Crockett, and Martin highlight the threat the policies of the democratic socialists present:

  • Socialist‑style economic agendas: high taxes, state ownership or control of key services, wealth redistribution, and public housing.
  • Centralization and bureaucracy: eroding private enterprise and local autonomy in favor of big‑government solutions.

Their platform ideas might sound attractive, even utopian — free housing, free transit, free college, free healthcare, freedom from consequences. Blend in “corporate reform” (aka abolishing capitalism) and an overarching, big government as the solution approach, they have the perfect roadmap to drive us into massive government dependency, reduced personal initiative, and saddle taxpayers with unsustainable costs.

As Republicans in Tuolumne County, we need to highlight this ideological shift and call it for what it is – a road to ruin. We must continue to promote an alternative vision grounded in limited government, personal responsibility, free markets, and local control, not centralized planning. A vision that promotes the rights and values articulated in the Constitution.
